The website I chose to submit is from the Armenian Institute and the focus in on the Armenian genocide which occurred from 1915 to 1918. In Turkey, Armenians are the minority because of divisions along the lines of religion. Turkey which was a part of the Ottoman Empire at the time primarily associated itself with Islam, while Armenian’s follow Christianity. As a result of this religious tension the Turks slaughtered 600,000 to 1 million Armenians as they tried to force them out of Turkey. Obviously this was an absolute tragedy and unfortunately there is a lot of controversy surrounding it. To this day the state of Turkey is reluctant to admit to this genocide. This is a topic in world history that seems to be overlooked in U.S. history courses because of the timing in which it occurred. This genocide was taking place while World War I was consuming all of Europe. Also, because the United States was not directly involved in this event, it is often not mentioned. None the less, this was an absolute catastrophe which affected millions of people and should be mentioned in classrooms across America. This is precisely the reason why I wanted to include this is our blog site for everyone to see and hopefully use this in the classroom.
This site is very well organized and seems to be tailored for the use of teachers. My favorite part of this website is the “Educational Resource” section which is conveniently found on the main page of this site. It includes a resource guide, sample lesson plan, information on documentaries and a suggested reading list all for teachers to use. There is also a plethora of primary sources including photographs which teachers can incorporate into their lesson plans. This website is an excellent tool for teacher to refer to, especially when taking into consideration the nature of this event which it focuses on. The Armenian Genocide is controversial, mostly because many people do not know it even existed. With this website however, teachers can educate their students about this event which affected the lives of so many people.
